On April 22, the world’s largest 105 MW 2-pole high-speed motor, “Chu Long 105,” independently developed by Zhongchu Guoneng (Beijing) Technology Co., Ltd. and Wolong Electric Nanyang Explosion-Proof Group Co., Ltd., was officially launched in Nanyang, Henan Province. This breakthrough product boasts full independent intellectual property rights.

On the same day, the “105 MW 2-Pole High-Speed Motor for Compressed Air Energy Storage” product appraisal meeting, organized by the China Machinery Industry Federation, was successfully concluded.
Zhongchu Guoneng and Wolong Electric Nanyang Explosion-Proof forged a powerful collaboration, driven by user needs and anchored in deep supply chain synergy, to successfully develop this groundbreaking motor. Zhongchu Guoneng, an industrial arm of the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Engineering Thermophysics, possesses cutting-edge thermal management technologies and complex power system solutions. Wolong Electric Nanyang Explosion-Proof, leveraging over 50 years of industry expertise, excels in independent R&D, innovation, and full-process manufacturing systems, establishing a highly stable motor architecture. By combining their technical strengths, the two parties optimized designs, achieved multi-level coordination, and resolved critical challenges such as high efficiency, low vibration, and high reliability. The result is the “Chu Long 105,” the world’s largest high-speed motor tailored for compressed air energy storage (CAES) systems.

Moving forward, as advanced CAES systems evolve toward larger scale, higher efficiency, and reliability, the two companies will deepen R&D collaboration to establish a strategic partnership model focused on scaling, industrialization, and marketization. At the launch event, Mr. Ji Lü, General Manager of Zhongchu Guoneng, and Mr. Wan Chuangqi, Executive Director of Wolong Holding Group and Chairman of Wolong Electric Nanyang Explosion-Proof, signed a strategic cooperation agreement. This agreement aims to advance high-end equipment development for CAES, drive synergies across the value chain, and explore win-win business models for ecosystem growth.
The “Chu Long 105” motor pioneers integrated design in China’s large-scale energy storage sector, enabling dual-operation modes (electric and power generation) and serving as a core component of CAES systems. It eliminates drawbacks of conventional split-type motors—such as operational complexity, low system efficiency, and installation challenges—while enhancing stability. Moreover, it breaks reliance on imported high-power high-speed motors, overcoming critical “bottleneck” technologies for 100 MW-class motors. This achievement fills a domestic gap in dual-mode motor products and marks a milestone in advancing high-quality CAES industry development.
Beyond its technical leadership, the “Chu Long 105” delivers remarkable economic, environmental, and social benefits. Compared to conventional multi-motor systems of equivalent power, it reduces footprint by over 40%, improves efficiency by 0.4%, and saves approximately RMB 1.8 million annually in electricity costs, significantly lowering construction and operational expenses. Over the next three years, orders are expected to exceed 100 units, generating over RMB 2 billion in sales and driving upstream/downstream industry revenues exceeding RMB 10 billion.
Third-party testing confirms the motor’s comprehensive efficiency at 98.8%, with a single-unit capacity of 105 MW—the world’s largest—doubling the capacity of comparable domestic CAES products. Its ultra-low vibration (below 35 μm) is less than half of China’s national standard (80 μm).
The appraisal panel unanimously concluded that the “105 MW 2-Pole Synchronous Motor-Generator for Compressed Air Energy Storage” possesses independent intellectual property rights, with overall technology reaching internationally advanced levels. Notably, its capacity and efficiency lead global benchmarks. This achievement fills China’s gap in high-power synchronous motor-generators, breaks foreign monopolies, and provides critical equipment support for large-scale, long-duration CAES industry advancement.
