State Power Investment Corporation’s Chunuo Heat Pump Long-Duration Energy Storage Technology Review Meeting Successfully Held

On July 9, SPIC Science and Technology Research Institute Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Central Research Institute”) successfully held a review meeting on the technological innovation and industrial promotion achievements of Chunuo Heat Pump Energy Storage (Carnot Battery) in Future Science City, Changping District, Beijing. The meeting aimed to further advance the in-depth development and widespread application of Chunuo heat pump energy storage technology, providing strong support for achieving the country’s “dual-carbon” strategic goals.

The review meeting gathered numerous experts, scholars, and industry elites from top domestic universities, research institutions, and related enterprises. Members of the expert group included distinguished experts and scholars with profound expertise in energy and energy storage from Tsinghua University, Peking University, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Southeast University, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and North China University of Technology, as well as technical directors from enterprises such as Jilin Electric Power Co., Ltd. and SPIC Nuclear Power Co., Ltd.

The meeting was chaired by Shen Feng, Member of the Party Committee and Deputy General Manager of the Central Research Institute. Attendees included Tian Lin, Deputy Director of SPIC’s Science, Technology and Digital Intelligence Department, as well as relevant personnel from the New Energy Technology Innovation Management Office of the Strategic Emerging Industries Department and the Thermal Power Office of the Basic Industries Department. Fan Sheng, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the Central Research Institute, and Tian Lin, Deputy Director of the Group’s Science, Technology and Digital Intelligence Department, delivered welcome speeches, extending warm welcome and sincere gratitude to the attending experts. Subsequently, Bai Ning, Director of the New Energy Storage Technology Research Institute, gave a detailed report on the R&D background, technical principles, core innovation achievements, and progress in industrial promotion of Chunuo heat pump energy storage technology. The attending experts listened carefully to the report and conducted in-depth exchanges and discussions on technical details, application scenarios, and industrial prospects.

After rigorous review, the expert group unanimously agreed that Chunuo heat pump energy storage technology holds significant strategic value, highly aligning with the national “dual-carbon” strategy and the Group’s new energy development layout. It plays a crucial supporting role in energy transition and green development. Domestically, the technology has pioneered a complete R&D and design system, covering research on heat pump energy storage mechanisms, development of core systems and equipment, process scheme design, control system development, and pilot system testing. It boasts full independent intellectual property rights, with major breakthroughs in related technologies and core equipment, and its technical solutions are internationally leading. Additionally, the technology demonstrates outstanding industrial value by systematically proposing “heat pump + main power source” solutions, with broad application prospects and remarkable economic and social benefits.

The expert group recommended that the Central Research Institute should promptly complete the testing and verification of the pilot system. Building on the current solid technical foundation, it should accelerate the development of high-power configurations with different structures, promote applications for national major projects, and quickly plan and advance the implementation of high-power demonstration projects to lead the rapid development of this technology.

The successful convening of this review meeting marks that Chunuo heat pump energy storage technology has achieved phased results in R&D and industrial promotion, while also charting a clear direction for its future development. SPIC Central Research Institute will continue to uphold the philosophy of innovation-driven and technology-led development, increase investment in technological R&D, accelerate industrial promotion, and contribute more to advancing China’s energy storage technology and facilitating energy transition.
