Recently, the heat exchanger module for the thermal storage system of the Guoneng Langfang Thermal Power 350MW unit flue gas molten salt energy storage demonstration project, manufactured by Harbin Electric Corporation Boiler Company, has completed all production and manufacturing processes and was officially shipped for delivery.

As a first-of-its-kind major technological equipment project in the energy sector under the third batch of national initiatives, jointly declared by Harbin Electric Corporation Boiler Company, Huairou Laboratory, and other institutions, the Guoneng Langfang flue gas molten salt energy storage demonstration project is a key pilot project for advancing energy sector reform in China. It holds significant strategic importance for optimizing the energy structure and ensuring secure and stable energy supply. Aiming to build a coal-fired power unit with world-leading peak-shaving flexibility, the project is committed to providing a demonstration model for the integrated development of flexibility retrofits in global coal-fired units and new energy storage systems. Upon commissioning, the unit will achieve a peak-shaving rate of 6%Pe/min, making it the molten salt-coupled thermal power unit with the fastest response speed and lifecycle peak-shaving rate globally, with all parameters reaching internationally leading levels.
During the project’s development, the team faced dual technical challenges in modular integration and densely arranged tubing. To address modular integration, designers conducted specialized research to optimize splitting and splicing schemes, ensuring precise matching and smooth connections between modules. In response to the limited assembly space and high welding difficulty caused by dense tubing, Harbin Electric Corporation Boiler Company innovatively adopted high-precision positioning tooling and specialized welding techniques. By strictly controlling the precision of each process, the company overcame assembly and welding bottlenecks, ensuring both quality and efficiency in equipment manufacturing, and successfully advancing the direct heating of molten salt using boiler flue gas technology into engineering application.
The successful shipment of the heat exchanger module marks a significant milestone in the engineering application of key equipment for the national first-of-its-kind flue gas molten salt thermal storage system.
