The Longshan 600MW Thermal Power Extraction Steam Molten Salt Energy Storage Project of the State Energy Investment Group Officially Commences Operation

This project is a key scientific and technological project of the State Energy Investment Group, with a total investment of 320 million yuan and an area of approximately 7,900 square meters. The project adopts the multi-source extraction steam – steam distribution regulation and control technology. It is a large-scale extraction steam molten salt energy storage project that can both perform peak regulation and peak shaving. Using molten salt as the heat storage medium, it stores energy during the low-load period of the power grid and releases energy during the peak-load period of the power grid, thus improving the stability of the power grid.

As a new type of clean, efficient, and environmentally friendly energy storage method, the thermal power coupled molten salt energy storage technology has many advantages such as fast response speed, stable operation status, and low maintenance cost. After the thermal power units of the Longshan Power Plant applied this technology, the peak regulation capacity increased by 100 megawatts on the original basis, and the peak shaving capacity increased by 30-60 megawatts. At the same time, the internal heat exchange efficiency of the molten salt heat storage system is not lower than 95%, the power conversion efficiency is not lower than 70%, and the load climbing ability of the units has increased by 1.5 times on the existing basis. The project consumes approximately 520 million kilowatt-hours of new energy each year.

As an important practice of the national energy transformation, the successful operation of this project not only verifies the feasibility of the thermal power extraction steam molten salt energy storage technology in large-scale applications, but also forms a new model of “technological innovation + energy storage application” that can be used for reference and promotion, providing strong support for the construction of a modern energy system that is “clean, low-carbon, safe, and efficient”.
