Main Structure of Inner Mongolia Sonid Left Banner 100MW/400MWh Compressed Air Energy Storage Demonstration Project Phase I Officially Breaks Ground

On July 17, the main structure of the Sonid Left Banner 100MW/400MWh Compressed Air Energy Storage Demonstration Project Phase I, participated in by China Railway 14th Bureau, officially broke ground. The project will innovatively adopt artificial underground caverns for storing and releasing electrical energy, capable of continuously supplying power at a rate of 100 megawatts for 4 hours under a high internal pressure of 16 megapascals.

This project is a landmark achievement of China Railway Construction Corporation in actively implementing General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important instruction of “marching into the deep earth” and, combined with its own resource endowments, taking underground space as a means to cultivate new productive forces.

Upon completion and commissioning, the project will be able to store 280,000 kWh of abandoned wind and photovoltaic power within 7 hours, continuously output high-quality electrical energy for 4 hours, and achieve an annual peak-shaving capacity of 120 million kWh. It will effectively improve the local new energy absorption capacity, alleviate regional power supply and peak-shaving pressures, and provide guarantees for the safe and stable operation of the power grid.
