Recently, Jena Flow Batteries has reached a cooperation agreement with Germany’s major energy company Uniper. The two parties will leverage their respective technological and market strengths to establish a strategic partnership, jointly expanding application scenarios for aqueous organic flow batteries in Europe and exploring commercialization pathways for long-duration energy storage technology.
Headquartered in Düsseldorf, Uniper is a state-owned operator of major European utilities and large-scale natural gas infrastructure. Its business covers traditional power generation, energy storage, and energy trading. In 2023, Uniper ranked 16th on the Fortune Global 500 list.
Currently, both parties have entered the project implementation discussion phase and plan to complete the first organic flow battery application project at a suitable Uniper site in Europe. This collaboration not only marks the beginning of in-depth cooperation between the two entities but also serves as a significant milestone for aqueous organic flow batteries in expanding the European market. The partnership will provide Uniper with flexible and forward-looking grid-scale energy storage solutions, offering crucial technical support for building a renewable energy-centered power system.
Aqueous organic flow batteries use widely sourced organic molecules as electrochemically active substances dissolved in water. With a neutral pH and metal-free composition, they pose no pollution risk to the natural environment. The batteries feature intrinsic safety—their electrolyte does not combust or explode when exposed to open flames—and have a design lifespan of 25 years. Suitable for grid-side peak shaving and frequency regulation as well as user-side long-duration energy storage, this technology holds broad application prospects and significant market potential in Europe.
