Meath firm eyes up ‘long duration’ battery energy storage facility in Monaghan

Meath based firm has outlined plans to construct a “long duration” battery energy storage facility in county Monaghan.

Old Mill Energy Ltd has submitted plans to carry out the development on a two and a half acre site at Feebane, Castleshane, around 10km from Monaghan town.

In planning documents accompanying its submission, Old Mill Energy officials outline how the proposed development will be capable of storing electricity for between four to eight hours and have an operational lifespan of 35 years.

Alongside a battery energy storage compound, the project encompasses moves to install 100 metres of underground cable to an existing ESB substation at Lisdrum, together with electrical transformers, CCTV and security gates.

In a screening report accompanying its plans, Old Mill Energy chiefs say the proposed development ticks many of the boxes that are associated with Ireland’s transition from a brown to green economy.

“The proposed development will provide Long Duration Energy Storage solutions to the national grid,” the report contends.

“Long duration energy storage (LDES) will be crucial to our future energy systems and enable increasingly high levels of renewable penetration.”

A final decision on the plans is expected to be made on or before January 2, 2026.
