US-based brick battery start-up Electrified Thermal Solutions has opened a new headquarters in the Boston area, along with a production facility with a capacity to support more than 500 MWh of annual deployments of its Joule Hive thermal batteries.

The factory advances production timelines and supports the company’s goal of achieving 2 GW of thermal power capacity by 2030, it said.
The new milestones follow the commissioning of Electrified Thermal’s first MW-scale demonstration in Texas, which paved the way for commercial deliveries as soon as this year. They also come after the company sealed a key raw materials supply agreement with HarbisonWalker International (HWI).
Electrified Thermal’s Joule Hive battery uses E-Bricks, oxide-based, electrically conductive firebricks designed to eliminate the degradation issues of conventional heating elements and deliver temperatures up to 1,800°C. The technology, which could serve the steel, cement, chemicals and mining sectors, has a projected lifespan of 20 to 30 years.
Originally developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Electrified Thermal was founded in 2020. The company counts among its backers ArcelorMittal, Holcim and EDP, and is also supported by Massachusetts’ venture capital arm MassVentures.
