While lithium-ion\u00a0remains\u00a0dominant, pressure is building for longer-duration storage, safer\u00a0chemistries\u00a0and more resilient supply chains in the face of AI-driven load growth, data center demand, wildfire risks and tightening domestic content rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>pv&nbsp;magazine USA&nbsp;<\/strong>spoke with leaders from around the energy storage industry to learn more about&nbsp;what\u2019s&nbsp;next for batteries in 2025.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Longer-duration storage will shift from a niche solution to a strategic necessity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs we look to 2026, the industry is moving toward greater technology diversity, more stable revenue models and continued cost declines that will make&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pv-magazine-usa.com\/2025\/10\/09\/why-big-tech-could-outpace-utilities-in-deploying-multi-day-storage\/\">longer-duration battery energy storage<\/a>&nbsp;an essential pillar of U.S. energy strategy.\u201d&nbsp;<em>\u2013 Giovanni Damato, President,&nbsp;CMBlu&nbsp;Energy, Inc.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFuture market designs must match renewable supply with industrial demand and support longer-duration storage and innovative approaches, unlocking additional revenue streams like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pv-magazine-usa.com\/2025\/09\/23\/arbitrage-remains-leading-use-case-for-u-s-grid-scale-batteries\/\">energy arbitrage<\/a>, peak shaving and congestion management.\u201d&nbsp;<em>\u2013 Matt Kennedy, Global Head of Client Transformation, IDA Ireland<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen paired with any generation that can come online quickly, long duration storage can deliver the firm reliability consumers need and expect. Fast, affordable, and firm power is on track to win on economics with the&nbsp;assistance&nbsp;of long duration storage, and that momentum&nbsp;isn\u2019t&nbsp;slowing, no matter the political climate.\u201d&nbsp;<em>\u2013 Arvin Ganesan, CEO,&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ess-news.com\/2025\/07\/17\/why-elcc-is-becoming-the-grids-next-big-storage-metric\/\"><em>Fourth Power<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs data center demand continues to surge, there\u2019s growing recognition that we need longer-duration storage solutions and hybrid configurations that can provide the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pv-magazine-usa.com\/2025\/10\/21\/energy-storage-reshapes-data-center-siting-amid-regulatory-pressure\/\">sustained backup power<\/a>&nbsp;and grid stability these facilities require.\u201d&nbsp;<em>\u2013 Jim Spencer, President and CEO, Exus Renewables<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Safety concerns could push non-flammable chemistries back into the conversation.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think 2027 is more likely than 2026 for wildfire-prone regions like California to begin explicitly valuing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pv-magazine-usa.com\/2025\/10\/03\/nrel-researchers-address-safety-implications-of-next-generation-battery-technologies\/\">non-flammable storage chemistries<\/a>&nbsp;in procurement or permitting. What would make things move quickly is another&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pv-magazine-usa.com\/2025\/08\/14\/what-can-be-learned-from-grid-scale-battery-fires\/\">Moss Landing fire incident<\/a>&nbsp;somewhere, and I think&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;a question of when, not if.\u201d&nbsp;<em>\u2013 Eugene Beh, CEO,&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/pv-magazine-usa.com\/2025\/11\/10\/quino-energy-closes-10-million-to-scale-organic-flow-batteries\/\"><em>Quino Energy<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Non-lithium chemistry deployment will accelerate, though 2026 might not be its banner year.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile 2026 may not see a dramatic shift in new battery chemistries, they are on the horizon with new&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ess-news.com\/2025\/11\/20\/the-contract-fab-model-is-heading-for-batteries\/\">manufacturing<\/a>&nbsp;plants in the design stage.\u201d&nbsp;<em>\u2013 Steve Feinberg, President, Bluewater Battery Logistics<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe convergence of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pv-magazine-usa.com\/2025\/02\/27\/electric-vehicles-grid-problem-or-grid-solution\/\">EV<\/a>&nbsp;and storage supply chains is creating real momentum for \u2018built-at-home\u2019 solutions and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pv-magazine-usa.com\/2025\/11\/28\/sodium-ion-battery-cell-cost-could-drop-to-40-kwh-says-irena\/\">non-lithium chemistries<\/a>\u2026As the U.S. steadily moves toward a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pv-magazine-usa.com\/2025\/04\/10\/carbon-battery-startup-aims-to-make-energy-storage-circular\/\">circular storage economy<\/a>, alternative chemistries are shifting from \u2018nice-to-have\u2019 to \u2018must-have\u2019 because they improve safety, affordability, and long-term confidence.\u201d&nbsp;<em>\u2013 Julie Royes, Vice President of Corporate Affairs,&nbsp;CMBlu&nbsp;Energy, Inc.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA continued fall in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ess-news.com\/2025\/12\/09\/bnef-lithium-ion-battery-pack-prices-fall-to-108-kwh-stationary-storage-becomes-lowest-price-segment\/\">Li-ion battery prices<\/a>&nbsp;would be the largest bottleneck for non-lithium storage in 2026. However, there are other compelling geopolitical and supply chain reasons why cost might no longer be the biggest consideration in 2026, especially if China\/Taiwan\/Japan tensions continue to escalate.\u201d&nbsp;<em>\u2013 Eugene Beh, CEO, Quino Energy<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Recycling and domestic processing will become a supply chain requirement, not just&nbsp;a&nbsp; sustainability&nbsp;move.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pv-magazine-usa.com\/2025\/12\/08\/the-role-of-robotics-in-boosting-u-s-solar-recycling-capacity\/\">Localized recycling<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pv-magazine-usa.com\/2025\/03\/27\/inlyte-energy-shuffles-in-a-new-era-for-iron-sodium-batteries\/\">domestic processing<\/a>&nbsp;will become non-negotiable if the U.S. wants its battery supply chains to stay domestic. Shipping black mass overseas for processing goes against the logic of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pv-magazine-usa.com\/2025\/03\/17\/whats-next-for-american-battery-manufacturing\/\">domestic manufacturing<\/a>. In 2026, the winners won\u2019t just be the ones building cells and&nbsp;packs,&nbsp;they\u2019ll be the ones who can close their loop locally, from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pv-magazine-usa.com\/2025\/03\/19\/comstock-metals-tackles-closed-loop-solar-recycling\/\">materials recovery<\/a>&nbsp;through finished&nbsp;batteries.\u201d&nbsp;<em>\u2013 Joe&nbsp;Adiletta, CEO,&nbsp;Volexion<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile it would be great to find a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pv-magazine-usa.com\/2025\/10\/20\/moment-energys-repurposed-ev-batteries-win-first-ever-ul-safety-approval-for-second-life-storage\/\">reuse value<\/a>&nbsp;for end-of-life battery energy projects, the reality of cheaper, smaller, and safer new batteries leaves recycling as the only option for disposal.\u201d&nbsp;<em>\u2013 Steve Feinberg, President, Bluewater Battery Logistics<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The value of&nbsp;standalone&nbsp;storage will be recognized.&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re seeing storage evolve from just being paired with solar for energy arbitrage to becoming a critical&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ess-news.com\/2025\/09\/10\/storage-investment-standalone-batteries-changing-the-market\/\">infrastructure component<\/a>&nbsp;that enables&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pv-magazine-usa.com\/2025\/10\/22\/pnw-data-center-opts-for-bess-to-jump-the-interconnection-queue\/\">data centers<\/a>&nbsp;to operate on clean energy while maintaining the reliability their operations demand.\u201d&nbsp;<em>\u2013 Jim Spencer, President and CEO,&nbsp;Exus&nbsp;Renewables<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Foreign Entity of Concern (FEOC) implementation will reshape sourcing strategies more than technology choices.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe BESS supply chain is working hard to figure out the industry impact of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pv-magazine-usa.com\/2025\/08\/20\/turbulent-times-for-u-s-energy-storage\/\">FEOC regulations<\/a>, and a variety of options will present themselves over the coming year. The good thing is that there is so much recognition that BESS is good for the grid, I have no doubt in the fact that [we] will have options and that compliance will not be a major issue.\u201d&nbsp;<em>\u2013 Chris McKissack, CEO, Fullmark Energy<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDevelopers now face dramatically higher construction costs from the Trump administration\u2019s aggressive tariff policies. Since January 2025, battery storage costs have risen 56% to 69% due to Trump\u2019s tariffs. Smarter regulation and new grid technologies can finally unlock capacity and move clean power where&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;needed most.
