{"id":1054,"date":"2026-01-06T01:51:21","date_gmt":"2026-01-06T01:51:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.esplaza.com.cn\/?p=1054"},"modified":"2026-01-06T01:51:21","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T01:51:21","slug":"manchester-leads-3m-gpstore-storage-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/en.esplaza.com.cn\/index.php\/2026\/01\/06\/manchester-leads-3m-gpstore-storage-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Manchester leads \u00a33m GPStore storage project"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/en.esplaza.com.cn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1055\" srcset=\"https:\/\/en.esplaza.com.cn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-2.png 960w, https:\/\/en.esplaza.com.cn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-2-300x188.png 300w, https:\/\/en.esplaza.com.cn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-2-768x480.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.manchester.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of Manchester<\/a>&nbsp;is set to head a major UK-wide storage project focused on developing GPStore, an innovative&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bestmag.co.uk\/?s=LDES\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">long\u2011duration energy storage<\/a>&nbsp;system designed to support the nation\u2019s shift towards net zero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The initiative, led by Professor Yasser Mahmoudi Larimi, has secured a \u00a33 million EPSRC Critical Mass Programme Grant and unites specialists from The University of Manchester, the University of Birmingham, the University of Liverpool, Cranfield University and Imperial College London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As renewable generation grows, the UK faces a persistent challenge: storing surplus electricity produced during sunny or windy periods so it can be used when demand increases or weather conditions change. GPStore aims to provide a first-of-its-kind solution capable of holding clean energy for extended periods \u2013 from hours to entire seasons \u2013 far beyond the capabilities of today\u2019s mainstream technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Professor Mahmoudi Larimi said, \u201cThis award represents a major step forward for UK energy innovation. GPStore addresses some of the most persistent barriers to long-duration storage \u2013 cost, scalability and environmental sustainability \u2013 and has the potential to unlock widespread renewable-energy integration across the UK and globally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Current options such as pumped hydro, compressed air and flow batteries offer shorter-duration storage but often come with geographical limits, high costs or complex engineering. The GPStore storage project takes a different route by converting excess renewable electricity into high\u2011temperature heat stored in solid particles inside insulated aboveground tanks.
