Coal plants are retiring, renewables are scaling fast, and federal and state governments are developing policy frameworks that have the potential to significantly increase the deployment of Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES). South Australia has just launched its first\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/reneweconomy.com.au\/south-australia-unveils-first-auction-as-worlds-most-advanced-renewables-grid-seeks-long-duration-storage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Firm Energy Reliability Mechanism<\/a>\u00a0auction to procure 700 MW of long-duration \u201cfirm\u201d capacity by 2031. In August,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ldescouncil.com\/news\/new-south-wales-increases-clean-energy-targets-by-50-a-model-for-australias-energy-future\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New South Wales increased its long-duration storage target<\/a>\u00a0to 42 GWh by 2034. And, at the federal level, the government is reviewing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aemo.com.au\/initiatives\/major-programs\/nem-reform-program\/about-nem2025-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reforms<\/a>\u00a0to the National Electricity Market (NEM) focused on flexibility of all types and durations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"721\" height=\"370\" src=\"https:\/\/en.esplaza.com.cn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-9.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-406\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/en.esplaza.com.cn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-9.png 721w, https:\/\/en.esplaza.com.cn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-9-300x154.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 721px) 100vw, 721px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Together, these developments highlight the country\u2019s growing emphasis on delivering a flexible, reliable, clean and affordable energy system. In South Australia \u2014 where around 75% of electricity generation already comes from renewables \u2014 the auction aims to support one of the world\u2019s most renewables-dense grids, targeting projects with at least 30 MW and eight or more hours of storage to help deliver 100% net renewables by 2027. The tender will seek 700 MW of capacity\u2014400 MW to be operational by November 2028, a further 200 MW by late 2029, and the remaining 100 MW by 2031.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At federal level, the LDES Council welcomes the focus on system flexibility in the NEM review and submitted a response. The LDES Council highlights that the reforms, especially the proposal to underwrite later-year contracts through the Electricity Services Entry Mechanism (ESEM), could help unlock investment in long-duration storage and offer a model for other markets to consider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response to the proposals, the LDES Council calls for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Rewarding long-duration flexibility:<\/strong>\u00a0Review market price settings to better reward the value of multi-day and seasonal storage that supports the grid during periods of low renewable output.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Improving liquidity and access:<\/strong>\u00a0Introduce a Market-Making Obligation (MMO) and suitable hedging products such as spread contracts and seasonal firming.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Matching contract terms to LDES lifetimes:<\/strong>\u00a0Extend ESEM contract tenors beyond 15 years to reflect longer LDES asset lives.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Aligning grid policy with flexibility:<\/strong>\u00a0Reward flexible assets for reducing congestion at both transmission and distribution level and prioritise them in the connection queue.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Will Broad, Global Policy &amp; Markets Director at LDES Council, commented: \u201cThese proposals could help create a market that drives investment in long-duration storage, strengthening reliability for consumers and positioning Australia as a global clean-energy leader.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About the Long Duration Energy Storage Council (LDES Council)<\/strong><br>The Long Duration Energy Storage Council is a global organisation dedicated to advancing decarbonisation by accelerating the deployment of LDES solutions.
