Altern\u014d<\/em><\/strong>, an Asia-based climate-tech company pioneering sand-based thermal battery systems, announced today the establishment of\u00a0Altern\u014d Japan GK<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture<\/strong>. This marks a major milestone in the company’s mission to decarbonize industrial heat \u2014 a sector responsible for ove<\/em>r 30% of global CO\u2082 emissions \u2014 through affordable, zero-emission thermal energy storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Supported by the\u00a0Ibaraki Prefecture Startup Visa Program\u00a0and Leave a Nest<\/strong>, the new entity will serve as Altern\u014d’s regional hub for\u00a0product localization, R&D, and pilot-scale manufacturing<\/strong>. The initiative is being developed in collaboration with\u00a0Kikuchi Seiki Co., Ltd.<\/strong>, and\u00a0Yamazaki Industry Co., Ltd.<\/strong>, with additional coordination from\u00a0JETRO<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Tsukuba City<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Powering Japan’s Industrial Heat Transition<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Altern\u014d’s patented Sand Battery<\/strong> stores renewable electricity as high-temperature heat (up to 600\u00b0C) using abundant, recyclable sand as the storage medium. The system enables factories to transition from fossil fuels to renewable heat without compromising performance or safety. Unlike lithium-ion batteries, Altern\u014d’s system is non-toxic, fireproof, and made from locally sourced materials<\/strong>, ensuring both environmental and economic sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Japan, Altern\u014d will focus on delivering solutions for agriculture, such as low-carbon heat for greenhouses and food drying, as well as light manufacturing, including textile and material drying processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company is also developing Altern\u014d E<\/strong>, a next-generation sand-based electricity storage system for data centers and critical infrastructure<\/strong>, designed to replace lithium batteries while ensuring safe, stable and clean backup power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
