{"id":804,"date":"2025-11-18T01:13:41","date_gmt":"2025-11-18T01:13:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.esplaza.com.cn\/?p=804"},"modified":"2025-11-18T01:13:41","modified_gmt":"2025-11-18T01:13:41","slug":"quino-energy-expects-indian-flow-battery-deal-to-spur-u-s-deployments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/en.esplaza.com.cn\/index.php\/2025\/11\/18\/quino-energy-expects-indian-flow-battery-deal-to-spur-u-s-deployments\/","title":{"rendered":"Quino Energy expects Indian flow battery deal to spur U.S. deployments"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/en.esplaza.com.cn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/image-33-1024x683.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-805\" srcset=\"https:\/\/en.esplaza.com.cn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/image-33-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/en.esplaza.com.cn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/image-33-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/en.esplaza.com.cn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/image-33-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/en.esplaza.com.cn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/image-33.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this month, California-based flow battery developer Quino Energy&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pv-magazine-usa.com\/2025\/11\/10\/quino-energy-closes-10-million-to-scale-organic-flow-batteries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">received $10 million<\/a>&nbsp;in investment funding from India-based Atri Energy Transition to&nbsp;establish&nbsp;production in India for&nbsp;its electrolyte formulation to be used in&nbsp;long-duration energy storage (LDES) applications.&nbsp;The agreement also&nbsp;provides for&nbsp;an&nbsp;additional&nbsp;$6 million if needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Atri\u2019s interest in Quino\u2019s flow battery technology reflects LDES requirements in the dense urban environments of India\u2019s populous cities, which is the intended market. Frankly, fire-avoidance is a major concern for batteries&nbsp;that are&nbsp;to&nbsp;be located in&nbsp;multi-unit city housing,&nbsp;hospitals&nbsp;and commercial and industrial operations.&nbsp;Quino\u2019s electrolyte comes with&nbsp;essentially no&nbsp;fire risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike lithium-ion batteries, flow batteries typically use a non-flammable electrolyte that is mostly water with a greater or lesser percentage of other elements, depending on the formulation.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pv-magazine-usa.com\/2024\/05\/10\/quino-energy-ramps-up-production-of-its-organic-flow-battery-formulation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Quino\u2019s flow battery electrolyte<\/a>&nbsp;is&nbsp;based on quinone and is&nbsp;largely sourced&nbsp;from&nbsp;chemicals used in textile dyes, even from wastewater used in commercial processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eugene Beh, co-founder and CEO of Quino Energy, told&nbsp;<strong>pv&nbsp;magazine USA<\/strong>&nbsp;that the Atri deal is an example of a technology solving a practical problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think Atri\u2019s consideration is pretty straightforward: The raw material that we use is a dye for clothes and other commercial products,\u201d Beh said. \u201cWherever there\u2019s a textile industry we have access to abundant and inexpensive materials for our electrolytes. A lot of clothes are made in India.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beh says his company\u2019s patented quinone electrolyte formulation replaces vanadium in flow batteries, an element that is expensive and can be difficult to source. Quino produces electrolyte in the United States at a facility near Buffalo, N.Y., operated by its partner, Electrosynthesis Company. He expects Quino\u2019s deal with Atri will lead to expanded U.S. production of its electrolyte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If flow batteries, which are based on a long-established technology, have&nbsp;only recently&nbsp;been&nbsp;considered as an alternative to lithium-ion batteries, this line of argument has been&nbsp;complicated&nbsp;the drastic cost reductions&nbsp;of the&nbsp;latter. Ramped up production of lithium-ion batteries worldwide and the promise of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pv-magazine-usa.com\/2025\/09\/12\/its-easy-to-announce-a-battery-gigafactory-its-much-harder-to-build-one\/\">\u201cgigafactories\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;in the U.S.&nbsp;may have lessened&nbsp;the cost argument for flow batteries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the fire issue&nbsp;remains. And while&nbsp;lithium-ion&nbsp;battery supplies and cell manufacturers go to great length to&nbsp;demonstrate&nbsp;the fire safety of their products,&nbsp;many,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pv-magazine-usa.com\/2025\/10\/03\/nrel-researchers-address-safety-implications-of-next-generation-battery-technologies\/\">including the National Renewable Energy Laboratory<\/a>, are looking for potentially safer and even less expensive alternatives.&nbsp;Perception&nbsp;can create its own reality, and government regulations may specify the scale,&nbsp;location&nbsp;and approved technologies for&nbsp;battery&nbsp;energy storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Beh, one of the important aspects of Atri\u2019s investment in Quino is that it will result in actual deployments of flow batteries in Indian cities, helping to build the use case for flow batteries elsewhere, including the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEven with developers who install lithium-ion batteries on a regular basis quite frequently don\u2019t know what flow batteries are,\u201d Beh said. \u201cAnd then I tell them, \u2018Hey, it\u2019s actually a pretty mature battery that\u2019s completely non -flammable.\u2019 And then you see the gears start turning in their heads, and they tell you about the projects they had to give up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier in 2025, Quino was awarded $10 million in grant funding from the California Energy Commission for an 8 MWh flow battery project at a regional health center, designed to provide critical emergency backup power and resilience.
