The “Power Heart” of CSP Plants — Molten Salt Pumps[Key Suppliers & Track Records Included]

In concentrated solar power (CSP) plants where molten salt is used as the heat transfer and storage medium, molten salt pumps serve as the core power equipment of the heat transfer and storage system. Their operational stability and reliability directly determine plant efficiency and operational safety.

Molten salt pumps are required to operate continuously under high-temperature conditions ranging from 220°C to 560°C. At the same time, they must withstand highly corrosive molten salts and the risk of crystallization and blockage at lower temperatures. These harsh conditions place stringent requirements on hydraulic design, high-temperature and corrosion-resistant material selection, precision manufacturing and assembly processes, as well as long-term operational reliability. As such, molten salt pumps are a critical component in advancing the localization of CSP equipment.

With the gradual commissioning of China’s first batch of CSP demonstration projects and hybrid “CSP +” integrated projects, the application of molten salt pumps in commercial CSP plants has become increasingly mature. A group of key suppliers with full-spectrum R&D, manufacturing capabilities, and lifecycle service capacity has also emerged.

Note: The following list, compiled by CSPPLAZA, summarizes major molten salt pump suppliers and their project track records in China’s CSP market for reference by project developers and procurement professionals.

Jiangsu Feiyue Pump Industry Co., Ltd.
Founded in 1957, the company is a professional pump manufacturer integrating R&D, manufacturing, sales, and services. It specializes in pumps designed for extreme conditions, including high temperature, high pressure, low temperature, low NPSH, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance.

The company has long been engaged in the development of key components for molten salt thermal energy storage systems. Through collaborations with Jiangsu University and Beijing University of Chemical Technology, it has developed high-performance molten salt pumps and next-generation molten salt media systems. In cooperation with Zhejiang Cousin Solar Technology Co., Ltd., it has also acquired capabilities in developing molten salt heaters and high-efficiency storage tanks.

Shanghai Kaiquan Pump (Group) Co., Ltd.
Established in 1995, Kaiquan is a large-scale comprehensive pump manufacturer integrating design, production, and sales of pumps, water supply equipment, and pump control systems. The company operates advanced machining centers, testing equipment, and CNAS-certified test platforms, enabling high-temperature material testing and mechanical seismic analysis.

In the CSP sector, Kaiquan has developed a range of products including vertical long-shaft molten salt pumps (for hot salt, cold salt, and temperature control), boiler feed pumps, and condensate pumps through years of practical experience and continuous optimization.

Lanzhou Pump Co., Ltd.
Originally established in 1958 as Lanzhou Water Pump Factory, the company is a key state-owned enterprise in China’s pump industry.

Its molten salt pumps are vertical suspended, wet-pit, single-casing guide vane centrifugal pumps with discharge outlets passing through riser pipes. These products, developed based on advanced international technologies, are widely used in CSP plants for hot and cold molten salt circulation, temperature regulation in tower systems, as well as salt melting and draining processes in both trough and tower CSP plants.

Jinan Huawey Pump Co., Ltd.
Formerly Jinan Water Pump Factory (founded in 1956), Huawey is a high-tech enterprise specializing in molten salt pump manufacturing and was once a key enterprise under the former Ministry of Machinery Industry.

The company has independent design and manufacturing capabilities for high-temperature pumps and operates a national Class B pump testing laboratory along with dedicated molten salt pump testing systems. It was among the first in China to localize molten salt pump products, which are now widely used in fine chemicals, heat treatment, and solar energy industries.

Jiangsu Shuangda Pump Industry Co., Ltd.
Founded in 2016, Shuangda specializes in pumps for large-scale refining, petrochemical, coal chemical, and PTA industries. It is recognized as a “Little Giant” enterprise under China’s specialization and innovation program and holds AAA-level quality certification.

Since its establishment, Shuangda has focused on high-temperature molten salt pump R&D. It has built a 16-meter-high RY(L) molten salt pump testing platform and developed pumps capable of operating at temperatures up to 600°C. The company holds multiple patents and collaborates with Jiangsu University and the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to build a complete technology chain from materials to system integration.

Its products have been successfully applied in the 10MW and 50MW tower CSP projects in Delingha developed by Supcon Solar, demonstrating excellent long-term reliability.

Jiangsu Jinlin Chemical Machinery Co., Ltd.
Established in 1987, Jinlin is a high-tech private enterprise specializing in molten salt pumps and chemical circulation pumps. It operates full-scale facilities including casting, machining, heat treatment, and assembly workshops, along with advanced testing platforms and ISO9001 certification.

In 1992, the company developed China’s first domestically produced high-temperature molten salt pump with independent intellectual property rights, which was successfully applied in chlor-alkali chemical processes, replacing imported products.

Suzhou Sulzer Pumps Co., Ltd.
Suzhou Sulzer is a wholly owned subsidiary of Switzerland-based Sulzer Pumps. Its business includes the R&D, design, and manufacturing of large-scale centrifugal pumps, including those for nuclear power applications, along with related technical and after-sales services.

Fully operational since 2010, the Suzhou facility is one of the largest and most comprehensive production bases within Sulzer’s global network, serving industries such as oil & gas, petrochemicals, power generation, and water treatment.

Zigong Industrial Pump Co., Ltd. (Sichuan)
Founded in 1967, the company (formerly Zigong Industrial Pump Factory) was designated by the former Ministry of Machinery Industry as a key manufacturer of slurry and corrosion-resistant pumps.

Over the years, it has developed into a comprehensive pump manufacturer offering slurry pumps, chemical pumps, clean water pumps, hydraulic turbines, and bottom-mounted agitators, with integrated R&D, manufacturing, sales, and EPC services.
