China Nuclear Huaneng Jinta 1.6 Million kW Wind, Solar, and Thermal Storage Project Achieves 25% Progress in Civil Construction of the Steam Supply Station

The China Nuclear Huaneng Jinta County 1.6 Million kW Clean Energy Security Project is part of Gansu Province’s third batch of large-scale energy base preparatory projects. It is an integrated clean energy project combining wind power, photovoltaics, thermal storage, and steam supply systems. The project is invested by China Nuclear Huaneng, with implementation by China Nuclear Huaneng (Gansu) Energy Co., Ltd., and the project company is Jinta Huike New Energy Development Co., Ltd..

The project plans to build 900 MW of wind power, 700 MW of photovoltaic capacity, along with supporting infrastructure including 440 MW electric steam boilers, three 25 MW electric heating molten salt heaters, and 2000 MWh molten salt thermal storage tanks. Additionally, two 330 kV collection and step-up substations and one 330 kV step-down substation will be constructed simultaneously.

Among the key components, the steam supply station and mirror field engineering represent the core infrastructure of the project, with a total investment of 830 million yuan, covering an area of 10 hectares. The steam supply station and the thermal storage system will serve as the critical conversion and storage hub for the project, integrating electricity—heat—storage systems.

The EPC contract for the steam supply station and mirror field engineering was awarded to a consortium including Nuclear Industry Engineering Research and Design Co., Ltd., China Energy Engineering Group North China Power Design Institute Co., Ltd., and China Nuclear Industry Second and Third Construction Co., Ltd..

The construction of the steam supply station officially began on December 19, 2025, and so far, 25% of the civil construction work has been completed. The work includes the foundation work for the boiler building, SGS building, and demineralized water workshop, as well as the main equipment foundations. Construction processes are progressing in an orderly manner.

Key equipment suppliers are as follows:

  • Steam Generator: Dongfang Electric Corporation, Dongfang Boiler Co., Ltd.
  • Molten Salt Thermal Storage System: Lanzhou Lanshi Heavy Equipment Co., Ltd.
  • DCS Control System: Beijing Hollysys Control Technology Co., Ltd.

Upon completion, the project is expected to provide approximately 2.58 million tons of industrial steam annually, transforming the region’s surplus, unstable wind and solar green electricity into stable, high-quality industrial steam. This integrated application of wind, solar, and thermal storage will support the green transformation of local industries, improve the consumption of clean energy, and optimize power resource allocation.
