Kyoto inaugurates its largest thermal battery in Hungary

Norwegian thermal energy storage (TES) firm Kyoto Group AS (FRA:77K) has inaugurated what it describes as the largest industrial thermal energy storage system in the world, a 56-MWh site built for Hungarian food ingredient producer KALL Ingredients Kft.

The molten salt thermal energy storage system marks the second deployment of Kyoto’s Heatcube solution in Europe. It was installed at KALL’s corn processing facility in Tiszapuspoki and will utilise intermittent renewable energy whenever available, while supplying steam for industrial production.

The system will be capable of providing more than 30 GWh of clean process heat annually, replacing natural gas and eliminating up to 8,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.

The project was delivered through a strategic heat-as-a-service partnership agreement, which also involved Kyoto’s financial partner Kyotherm and its Hungarian energy trading partner Energiaborze Kft. It will operate under a 15-year contract via a Hungarian single-purpose vehicle.

Kyoto launched its first commercially installed Heatcube in Denmark in June 2023.
